The know-how

Expertise in watchmaking and mechanical art allows for the creation of mechanical objects designed to measure and indicate time or, in the case of automatons and music boxes, to set objects in motion and play music. Their manufacture combines theoretical and practical skills specialised in the field of mechanics and micromechanics.

In watchmaking, there are nearly fifty different skills, which can be grouped into three categories: watchmaking practitioners, designers and decorators.

The professions of automaton maker and music box maker add many more specialisations of their own.

Transmissions

As part of the Franco-Swiss application for watchmaking and art mechanics skills to be included on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Musée du Temps in Besançon and the Musée international d'horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds have joined forces to produce a cross-border exhibition. The result was an exploration of the theme of intangible cultural heritage through photography, from new and sensitive angles of the know-how in watchmaking and art mechanics.

Six photographers explored workshops, companies, museums and schools in the Franco-Swiss watchmaking region, creating the material support for the exhibition. Presented in 2020-2021, the exhibition highlighted the fact that tangible and intangible heritage are often inseparable.

The know-how holders

Mechanics, automaton makers, art mechanics and other practitioners are the primary holders of this expertise.

ARC HORLOGER went to meet these ‘mechanics with golden fingers’ and produced the following series of portraits. Master craftsmen from the world of watchmaking and mechanical artistry talk about their careers, their professions and their extraordinary skills.
